Athens Central Market: Varvakios Agora

Vegetarians should probably not take a walk through the meat market at Varvakios Agora. However, everyone else might want to check it out! The hanging carcasses in the crowded meat market hall might just be too much for someone with an easily queasy stomach. But chefs and foodies will love exploring all the market stands for interesting ingredients.

The famous Athens Varvakios Agora has several halls. You’ll find meat, fish, vegetables, cheese, fruits, herbs and flowers at the Athens Central Market.

Open six days a week, this market is a must for the foodie traveler. Take in the sights and smells and perhaps buy some herbs to take home. The mountain tea is quite good, and dried oregano bunches make excellent gifts for cooks.
